It doesn’t matter where you bought your Kenmore Elite appliance. If it breaks, then Sears Home Services will send our expert appliance repair technicians to your home to repair and maintain your Kenmore Elite appliances.

Our technicians have the knowledge, technical resources and parts to fix any Kenmore Elite appliance.

Our specialized knowledge of these appliances leads us to share these common repair issues so you can know what to expect in the unlikely event that you encounter a problem with your Kenmore Elite model.

Refrigerator Problems

We sometimes see Kenmore Elite side-by-side fridges with the freezer working fine but the refrigerator section was too warm. This is a classic problem with 795-Series side-by-sides. The evaporator fan motor can sometimes get jammed by excessive frost due to an air leak through a door gasket. When the fan doesn’t run, the refrigerator won’t cool properly.

Inspect the door gaskets regularly and reattach any loose door seals. If a gasket is damaged, replace it. In some models, it’s easier to have a refrigerator repair technician replace the door gasket.

Control boards fail too in some Kenmore Elite refrigerators. Usually you'll notice weird temperature swings or the compressor never shuts off. The board controls everything - when the compressor runs, when defrost happens, all that. When it gets glitchy, nothing works right. Control boards are expensive. It’s best to have a professional service technician examine and repair the fridge when you suspect a control board failure.

Ice Maker Troubles

Ice makers cause more headaches than almost any other part. Water supply problems, motor failures, frozen fill tubes – we’ve seen them all.

The water inlet valve clogs from minerals in the water and won’t allow water to flow properly. Result? Small, hollow ice cubes or none at all. Replacing the water filter regularly helps prevent this problem.

The ice maker assembly has a motor inside that pushes the cubes out of the tray. Those motors wear out. You'll hear it trying to cycle but nothing happens. Or it makes a grinding noise like it's struggling. The whole assembly usually needs replacement when this happens.

Washer Not Spinning

Kenmore Elite washers have some really nice features. But when they stop spinning, your clothes aren't getting clean.

Drive belts break after years of use. You'll hear the motor running but the drum just sits there. Or maybe it rotates a little then stops. Getting to that belt means pulling the whole machine apart. This is not a five-minute replacement job. Seek professional appliance repair help when your washer won’t spin.

Motor couplers fail a lot on the direct-drive models. It's a small plastic and rubber piece that connects the motor to the transmission. Overloading the washer regularly causes them to wear out faster. It’s a pretty simple part to replace, but you still need to take half the washer apart to replace it.

Lid switches go bad too. They tell the machine if it's safe to spin. When they fail, the washer fills and agitates but won't spin or drain. You can unplug the washer and test the lid switch using a multimeter. Replace the switch if it’s bad.

Control Panel Issues

Many Kenmore Elite appliances feature advanced digital displays that look nice but can run into problems. Buttons stop responding or the display starts missing segments.

Power surges can fry these control panels. One good lightning storm and you're looking at an expensive replacement. Surge protectors help but most people don't use them.

Dryer Not Heating

We sometimes get service calls for a Kenmore Elite dryer running cold. Clothes just tumbling for hours, never getting dry. It’s a frustrating problem.

Here are common causes:

  • Heating elements burn out. They’re basically just a coil of wire that glows red hot. Eventually they break or short out. You can sometimes see damage by looking inside, but some damage is not always visible. Testing the element with a multimeter tells the true story.
  • Thermal fuses blow from clogged vents. The fuse is a safety device that prevents fires if the dryer gets too hot. When lint builds up in the exhaust, heat can't escape, and the fuse blows. The machine runs but won't heat until the fuse is replaced.
  • Gas valve solenoids fail on gas models. You might hear clicking when the dryer starts, but no flame ignites. Those solenoids open to let gas flow when the thermostat calls for heat. When they go bad, everything else works except the heating.

Dishwasher Not Cleaning Right

Kenmore Elite dishwashers have advanced wash systems. Multiple spray arms, targeted water jets, all sorts of tricks to get dishes clean. But sometimes they just don't work right.

  • Spray arms get clogged with food particles and mineral deposits. Water can't spray out with enough force to clean properly. The little holes need cleaning every so often. Toothpick or small wire works well for this.
  • Pump and motor assemblies wear out. You'll notice the water doesn't seem to be spraying as forcefully as it once did. Everything runs, but dishes come out dirty. The impeller inside the pump gets worn down over time. Whole assembly usually needs replacement.
  • Water inlet valves get restricted too. Not enough water entering the machine means poor cleaning performance. Minerals build up inside the valve and restrict flow. This usually happens gradually, so you might not notice until cleaning gets really bad.

Dishwasher Leaking Issues

  • Elite dishwashers leak for a few common reasons. Door gaskets get hard and cracked over time. They don't seal properly anymore. Water seeps out around the door during wash cycles.
  • Pump seals fail and let water escape underneath the machine. You might not even notice until you see water damage on the floor or cabinet.
  • The water inlet valve itself can leak. Usually drips from around the valve body or the hose connections. This is easy to spot if you pull off the bottom front toe panel and examine the fill valve and water line connection.

Range and Oven Problems

Kenmore Elite ranges have both gas and electric versions. Each has their own problems.

The oven igniter weakens on gas models. It's supposed to glow hot enough to open the gas valve and light the gas. When it gets weak, the oven takes forever to light, or never lights at all. Most common repair we do on gas Elites.

Bake elements burn out in electric ovens. They're just big heating coils. Metal fatigue after years of heating and cooling causes them to fail eventually. Usually see visible damage - holes, blisters, or broken sections.

Control boards fail in Kenmore Elite models with digital displays. Temperature regulation goes haywire. The oven runs too hot or not hot enough. Sometimes the display works fine but the oven doesn't respond to commands.

Cooktop Issues

Surface burners have their own problems. Electric coil elements just stop working. Or they heat unevenly - hot in some spots, cold in others.

The smooth-top models get broken elements under the glass. You can't see the damage, but the burner won't heat. Sometimes it heats but cycles on and off incorrectly.

Gas burners get clogged with food spillovers. The little holes get blocked and flames burn yellow instead of blue. Or they don't light evenly around the ring. Usually they just need cleaning, but sometimes the burner heads need replacement.

When To Call For Help

Some Kenmore Elite issues you can fix yourself. Cleaning dishwasher spray arms, checking for clogged dryer vents, making sure the fridge has proper airflow - simple maintenance often keeps things running right.
