Most common repairs needed to fix a GE refrigerator
Defrost Drain Replacement
When the defrost drain is clogged, frost and ice melting from the evaporator fins during the defrost cycle won’t be able to drain away, causing an overflow of water in the drain pan and leading to water leaking underneath the refrigerator. To prevent potential damage to the floor and refrigerator if leaks are noticed, have a Sears Home Services professional inspect the refrigerator to address and rectify the clogged defrost drain promptly.
Dispenser Water Tubing Replacement
Cracked refrigerator dispenser water tubing will result in water leaking around the dispenser area, leading to puddles or moisture accumulation on the exterior of the refrigerator. This leakage can result in decreased water flow to the dispenser. You might also notice water dripping from the dispenser nozzle or pooling in the dispenser tray. In some cases, a crack in the tubing can introduce contaminants or compromise the water's purity, affecting its taste and odor. Promptly addressing a cracked water tube with a Sears Home Services professional is crucial in preventing possible water damage.
Evaporator Replacement
A damaged refrigerator evaporator causes a decrease in overall cooling performance, leading to elevated temperatures in both the refrigerator and freezer compartments. These higher temperatures can result in food spoilage and less effective preservation of frozen items. Frost or ice buildup on the evaporator coils may hinder their ability to absorb heat efficiently. Excessive condensation inside the refrigerator can lead to leaks. Additionally, a damaged evaporator may cause unusual noises, such as hissing or gurgling sounds, during the refrigeration cycle.

Appliances, especially in the last 10 years, have become extremely advanced, and many models have electronic parts that are difficult to test. DIY repairs on the latest appliance models are becoming increasingly difficult.
Fixing a GE Fridge Leaking Water
Fixing a GE fridge leaking water begins with determining the source of the leak. Most of the time, you’ll find that the leak is coming from the defrost drain in the freezer. Water can freeze at the top of the defrost drain tube and prevent the condensate dripping from the evaporator during the automatic defrost cycle from draining down into the defrost drain pan by the compressor. Water will leak into the freezer and elsewhere when the defrost drain below the evaporator gets clogged with ice.
In a top-freezer GE fridge, water will overflow the tray below the evaporator and drip down into the refrigerator compartment. The water will collect under the crisper drawers at the bottom of the fridge. Although you can temporarily fix the problem by safely storing food and manually defrosting the freezer to remove the clog, the issue will likely return when your restart the fridge. It’s best to have a service technician permanently fix a problem with a frozen defrost drain in a top-freezer GE fridge. The technician may need to install a heat probe in the freezer that will prevent water from freezing and clogging the top of the defrost drain tube.
In a side-by-side or French door GE fridge leaking water, the overflowing defrost condensate water will leak into the freezer compartment and/or onto the floor. The water that leaks into the freezer compartment will freeze into a sheet of ice on the freezer floor.

Troubleshooting a GE Refrigerator Leaking
Finding a leak in a GE refrigerator can be challenging. If the fridge has an ice maker and/or water dispenser and the leak appears underneath the refrigerator, start by checking the water supply line connection on the back of the fridge.
Use a helper to carefully pull the refrigerator forward to access the water supply line connection. Check the water line and the connection on the back of the refrigerator for leaks. Replace the water line if it’s leaking. Tighten the water supply line connection if you see water dripping from that fitting. If tightening the connection fitting doesn’t fix the leak, replace the water supply line.
Another source of a GE refrigerator leaking underneath the fridge is an overflowing or cracked defrost drain pan. Unplug the fridge power cord and remove the machine compartment cover on the bottom of the outside back panel and check that drain pan to see if it is overflowing or damaged. Replace the defrost drain pan if it’s damaged. If the defrost drain pan is overflowing, use a towel to soak and remove the water from the pan and reinstall the machine compartment cover. Plug in the power cord and move the refrigerator back in place.
Excessive frost and ice on the evaporator is likely the cause of the defrost drain overflowing. Check the door gaskets because a leak of warm, moist air into the refrigerator or freezer compartment will cause the excessive frost and defrost drain pan overflow. Repair or replace any leaking gasket.
If your GE refrigerator is leaking water inside the freezer or refrigerator compartment, a frozen defrost drain tube is often the problem.
When you’re unable to find and fix a problem with your GE refrigerator leaking, schedule fridge repair service and we’ll send a Sears Home Services technician to your home to resolve the issue.

When the GE refrigerator freezer is leaking water from under the evaporator cover, the technician will remove the evaporator cover and to find the cause of the leak. If water is leaking from the drain tray below the evaporator, the technician will check the defrost drain tube for an ice clog that could be preventing condensate water from the evaporator from draining down to the defrost drain pan. The tech will defrost that area and clear the drain tube clog. The technician may install a heat probe – a metal device that connects to the defrost heater and extends down to the top of the defrost drain tube – to help prevent the defrost drain tube from getting clogged.
If the technician determines that the leak is coming from the ice maker fill line, the technician will replace the ice maker fill line.

What to do when you see Your GE Refrigerator Leaking Water from the Dispenser
Water leaking from the dispenser of your GE refrigerator could be coming from the ice chute or the water dispenser.
When water is dripping from the ice dispenser chute, check the bottom of the ice chute for ice chips or an ice cube stuck in the chute and preventing the ice chute door from closing. When this happens, the ice chips or cube will melt and drip water down through the ice chute. Clear any ice cubes or ice chips blocking the ice door from closing. This may fix the problem with your GE refrigerator leaking water from the dispenser.
If you find the ice dispenser door loose or damaged and not sealing properly, schedule refrigerator repair service to have a Sears Home Services technician visit your home and fix the ice door. Accessing and replacing that part is difficult and should be left to a professional.
How to Resolve a GE Refrigerator Water Dispenser Leaking
A leading cause of a GE refrigerator water dispenser leaking is air trapped in the water dispenser line after replacing the water filter. After replacing the water filter, you should dispense a gallon or so of water through the water dispenser to purge air from the water line so the water dispenser won’t drip.
If you didn’t purge a gallon of water through the water dispenser after replacing the water filter, perform that process and the water dispenser will likely stop dripping.
A leaking water valve can also cause a GE refrigerator water dispenser leaking. It’s best to have a service technician diagnose and repair this type of problem. A bad inlet water valve or faulty control can cause this type of water dispenser leak. The technician will examine the components in your water dispenser system and replace the defective parts causing the water dispenser leak.
