Sears continues to support and honor our military veterans by helping Military Makeover with Montel® to remodel the home of U.S. Army veteran Carlos Colón-Ruiz and his family in Arlington, Texas.
What is Military Makeover with Montel?
Military Makeover with Montel® is America’s leading reality TV show that offers hope and a helping hand here on the home front to members of our military and their loved ones. A veteran of both the Marine Corps and the Navy, talk show legend and military advocate Montel Williams along with a colorful cast transforms the homes and lives of military families across the country.
This special series enlists caring companies of all sizes as well as non-profits and the local community, including Sears, to help with the show. Military Makeover airs on Lifetime® and on the American Forces Network.
Help starts at home for veterans on Military Makeover. Sears and the Military Makeover team strive to change the living situation – and the lives – of veteran Carlos Colón-Ruiz and his family.
Who is Carlos Colón-Ruiz?
Colón-Ruiz’s military career has been substantial. As soon as he graduated from basic training in 2006, he was sent to the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Then, he joined the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment – one of the most recognized units in the United States due to its popularity in the HBO series, “Band of Brothers.” This unit was deployed to Ramadi, Iraq.
In 2008, Colón-Ruiz was deployed to Afghanistan and he was sent to the city of Wardack. During this tour, a rocket-propelled grenade exploded in his Humvee, which caused him to suffer several serious injuries.
His injuries include loss of sight in one eye, hearing impairment, loss of two fingers and two paralyzed fingers. All of this is unfortunate, but he continues to push through life.
Carlos Colón-Ruiz was awarded a Purple Heart and also received an Infantry Badge and Army Commendations Medal – recognition he well deserves.
We are pleased to help honor the Colón-Ruiz family by helping Military Makeover to remodel their home.

What Role is Sears Home Services Playing in the Remodel?
Front Entry Door
Sear Home Services donated the new entry door for the home makeover. By replacing the front door, we’re adding a visually appealing, personal touch to the home. Additionally, this new front entry door from Sears will lessen the loss of heated or cooled air through the door, helping reduce the family’s energy bill.
Here are additional details about the front entry door that we installed in the Colón-Ruiz home:
- Sears didn’t just replace the slab, the moving part of the door, we replaced the entire entry door system securing the door frame directly to the home’s framing for security and strength. This is what we do during every entry door installation.
- The entry door we installed is manufactured in the USA at Wincore Windows and Doors. These doors are manufactured with the best products so your door looks as great on Day 1,000 as it did on Day 1.
- Here are additional characteristics of Wincore doors that make them the best choice for upgrading the entry to a home:
- Wincore entry doors feature environmentally-friendly insulation that is 100% CFC-free (Chloro Fluoro Carbon) to provide a high R-value for maximum thermal protection.
- A fiberglass door won’t be marred by the wear and tear of everyday use and will be unaffected by moisture and humidity. The doors will not rot, splinter or warp like wood, and won’t dent or delaminate like steel entry doors.
- Energy efficient weather stripping provides a weathertight seal along the sides and top of the door frame to keep moisture, air and dirt out of the home.
Customized colors and hardware also make the front door beautiful – enhancing the home’s curb appeal.
Sears Home Services also installed a storm door from Larson Doors – the number 1 storm door manufacturer in the US.
These new entry doors provide a warm and inviting welcome to the Colón-Ruiz home.
New Home Appliances
Sears provided all of the new home appliances for the makeover. These new appliances will make a lasting impact on the Colón-Ruiz family by improving their quality of life, comfort, and even their financial situation.
Sears Protect Appliance Plan
Sears Home Services will also provide our Sears Protect Appliance Plan to cover their new appliances so the family won’t have to worry about paying high repair bills to fix anything that may go wrong with their appliances as they age.
Our Sears Protect Plan also provides the Colón family with spring and fall HVAC tune-ups for their heating & cooling system to help those systems run efficiently and prevent unexpected breakdowns. The heating and cooling system will also last longer when it’s regularly maintained.
Sears Home Services is honored to help the Colón-Ruiz family and all military veterans and their families.
