If you’re able to follow our Sears PartsDirect DIY troubleshooting to diagnose and fix your appliances, then you’ve already got a good understanding of what some service tech training looks like.
Service technicians analyze symptoms and use appliance technical data to test components and find the causes of appliance failures. Once the technician determines the cause of an appliance failure, he or she replaces parts or repairs the appliance to fix the problem.
Service Technician Training Process
Service techs receive basic training in safety, analyzing electrical circuits and customer service. Next, technicians go through advanced technical training to develop their ability to quickly and confidently figure out what’s wrong with an appliance then fix it.
When technicians complete service tech training, they’re able to follow proven methods of advanced diagnosis and testing to repair appliance failures. Sears technicians learn techniques of tracing electrical circuits and checking voltage at components in an electrical circuit using a standard operating procedure to accurately find the cause of appliance failures.
Sears Technicians also get hands-on training to replace a wide variety of component parts in appliances. For example, here’s a video that shows how a technician is trained to replace the electronic control board in a common range:

Some appliance repairs require special training and equipment. For example, working on sealed refrigerant systems requires a technician to have a CFC Certification. Additionally, refrigeration technicians need equipment such as these to work on sealed systems:
- Refrigerant recovery machine.
- Recovery tank.
- Charging cylinders.
- Vacuum pump.
- Special refrigerant system fittings and tools.
Sears Technicians receive CFC Certification training if necessary. They also receive extensive training on using specialized refrigeration system tools.
Repair of other appliances such as microwave ovens also requires special equipment. A microwave oven technician needs a Microwave Survey Meter to accurately measure microwave radiation. Microwave radiation leakage is required to be measured following any microwave oven repair.
