Why Is My Dishwasher Stopping Mid-Cycle?

Basic Troubleshooting Steps

When the dishwasher stops before it's done, first try these simple troubleshooting steps:

1. Open and close the dishwasher door to make sure it's latched securely.
2. Check the house circuit breaker for the dishwasher and reset the breaker if it's tripped.
3. Check the light switch on the wall next to the kitchen sink that controls power to the dishwasher and make sure it's turned on.
4. If the dishwasher has power, reset the electronic control board by disconnecting electrical power to the dishwasher for 2 minutes and then restoring power. (You can turn off the power switch, unplug the dishwasher or shut off the circuit breaker to disconnect electrical power.) Once the control reboots, the dishwasher may work normally. A power surge or glitch through the electrical power lines could have caused the control board to freeze up and stop working.

If these basic troubleshooting tips don’t help, take the steps outlined below to fix the dishwasher.

Dishwasher Has No Power

When your dishwasher won’t power back up after performing the basic troubleshooting steps described above (resetting the circuit breaker and checking the light switch beside the sink), follow the steps in this video to restore power to the dishwasher:

Test the Electrical Outlet for Power

Many dishwashers have a power cord that plugs into an electrical outlet under the sink. Make sure the power cord is plugged in.

If the power cord is plugged in, it’s possible the electrical outlet doesn’t work. Check the electrical outlet for power by plugging in a night light. If it doesn't light up, have an electrician repair the bad outlet.

Check Junction Box Wiring

If your power cord doesn't plug into an electrical outlet, then it’s hardwired into the junction box.

Check the power cord connections in the junction box.

1. Shut off the house circuit breaker for the dishwasher to disconnect electrical power—you don’t want electricity flowing to the junction box.
2. Remove the bottom front access panel and toe panel.
3. Remove the screw from the junction box cover and pull off the cover.
4. Check the black wire connection and the white wire connections.

Reconnect any loose or disconnected wires.

Reinstall the junction box cover and then reinstall the bottom front access panel and toe panel. Restore electrical power to the dishwasher and see if it works.

Check the User Interface Control Wire Harness

The control panel won't light up if its wire harness is disconnected.

1. Shut off power to the dishwasher.
2. Open the dishwasher door and remove the Torx screws from the outer edges of the inner door panel. So the outer door panel doesn’t fall off, support it with one hand as you remove the final screws.
3. Separate the outer door panel and the control panel and rest the outer panel on the floor.

If the user interface control wire harness is unplugged, reconnect it.

Reassemble the dishwasher and restore power.

Have a Service Technician Check the User Interface Control and Electronic Control Board

If the dishwasher still doesn't power up, then a defective user interface control, a failed electronic control board or a broken wire could be preventing the dishwasher from starting.

Schedule dishwasher repair to have a Sears Home Services technician examine and repair the dishwasher.

Additional diagnosis requires live voltage checks, which only should be performed by a service technician.

Dishwasher has Power but Won’t Start

When the dishwasher has power but won’t restart after stopping mid-cycle, follow the steps in this troubleshooting video:

Check the Door Latch Switch

If the door switch is stuck in the "open" position, the dishwasher won't start because it's waiting for you to shut the door—even if you actually did shut the door.

Follow these steps to test the door switch by checking resistance through that component using a multimeter:

1. Disconnect electrical power to the dishwasher by shutting off the house circuit breaker or unplugging the dishwasher.
2. Remove the Torx screws from the outer edges of the inner door panel. Support the outer door panel with one hand as you remove the final screws so it doesn't fall.
3. Separate the outer door panel and the control panel slightly from the inner door panel, and rest the outer panel on the floor while you disconnect the user interface control wire harness.
4. Pull off the outer door panel and control panel.
5. Release the door latch assembly from the inner door panel and unplug the wire harness from the door switch.
6. Carefully trip the door switch by pushing its lever, keeping your fingers away from the spring and latch.
7. Press the door switch lever to simulate a closed door that's engaging the door switch.

With the multimeter set to check resistance, place a meter probe against each of the door switch prongs.

You should measure near 0 ohms of resistance, or continuity, through a working door switch.

If you measure infinite resistance, replace the door switch because it's defective.

Have a Technician Check for Other Failures Preventing the Dishwasher from Starting

If you measured continuity through the door switch, it’s likely that a defective control board or a wiring failure elsewhere in the dishwasher is keeping the dishwasher from starting.

Schedule dishwasher repair service to have a Sears Home Services technician examine and repair these types of failures.

The technician can conduct live voltage checks—which should only be performed by someone with proper training and equipment—to determine the exact cause of the problem.

Resolve the Cause of an Error Code or Fault Code

An error code or fault code can stop your dishwasher mid-cycle and the dishwasher won’t start until you resolve the cause of the code.

Depending on your model, you may see lights flashing in a pattern on the control panel or you may see an alpha-numeric code in the digital display.

You’ll need to run the diagnostic test cycle on some dishwashers to clear the code after correcting the cause of the error code or fault code.
