TIPS FROM SEARS HOME IMPROVEMENT EXPERTS
Need to know more about home HVAC systems? Watch our video playlist for the best heating and cooling tips on operating and maintaining your air conditioning, furnace and other HVAC systems.
Do you consider yourself an HVAC pro? Or do you only think about your heating and cooling system if it breaks down? Regardless of which faction you fall into, one thing is for sure: There’s a lot that goes into maintaining your HVAC system.
From remembering how (and when!) to change your filter to scheduling routine maintenance checkups in the spring and fall, keeping your system running smoothly throughout the hot and cold months can seem overwhelming.
If your head spins just thinking about the complex system, don’t worry. We’ve compiled our most helpful HVAC videos all in one place so you can gain a better understanding of your heating and cooling system once and for all. Whether you’re interested in knowing more about the Sears HVAC Savings Program or need to learn how to choose the right air filters for your home, we’ve got you covered.
When shopping for air conditioner air filters, you’ll find dozens of choices available. In addition to seeing different brands, you’ll also notice a wide variety of air filter ratings. Three major rating systems exist for AC air filters.
- MERV – Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This AC air filter rating system is the prevalent standard established by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). MERV ratings allow you to compare filtration performance for many different brands and types of air conditioner air filters. Filter performance increases as the MERV number increases.
- MPR – Micro-Particle Performance Rating. 3M developed this rating system to measure its air conditioner air filters’ capacity to remove particles ranging in sizes from 0.3 to 1 micron. In this rating system, filter performance also increases as the MPR rating increases.
- FPR – You’ll only see the FPR rating system on AC filters in Home Depot stores. Home Depot developed this internal rating system for their air conditioner filters. Again, the higher the rating number, the better the filter’s performance.

Spring has sprung, and that means summer is right around the corner, so it’s time to make sure your air conditioner is ready for action. For many people, this isn’t a DIY job.
Call the experts at Sears Home Services, and a technician will come out to do a full inspection and make sure all systems are good to go. That way, your air conditioner will be ready to keep you cool this summer. Regular HVAC maintenance can help your air conditioner run more efficiently and prevent costly repairs down the road.
Lennie Arroyo, district manager for Sears HVAC service, gives the inside scoop on the inspection process that Sears experts will perform.
When summer comes along, you need your central AC unit to run without a hitch, and even the best air conditioners can run into issues with time. Is your AC not cooling? Don’t worry. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) experts at Sears Home Services can troubleshoot your air conditioner to get it running smoothly again. Use this air conditioning (AC) troubleshooting list to help you identify some common air conditioner problems like AC not cooling, and identify solutions.
Stay cool this summer—and save money—by addressing these hot spots.
Maintaining the optimal temperature in your home over the summer is no easy feat, because more factors come into play than simply setting the AC to your desired temp. The current state of your windows, HVAC system and insulation all can affect the temperature inside your home.

If you’re buying a new air conditioner and heater, here are a few things to consider to find the right HVAC system for your home.
Many factors go into choosing a new HVAC system. Whether you’re moving into a brand-new home or replacing your current system, you need to know a few important things.
Obviously, climate plays a major role in your decision, but there are many other factors to take into consideration as well. Although most people replace their HVAC with something just like it, it’s good to know what to ask to pinpoint what’s best for your needs. Russ Katsov, a HVAC expert for Sears Home Services, is here to help.
Surprisingly, the air inside your home can be more polluted than the air outside. Fortunately, a high-quality HVAC filter can help.
People often talk about outdoor air quality and how it affects our health—but poor indoor air quality can be just as detrimental. Poor indoor air quality can cause or contribute to the development of infections, lung cancer and chronic lung diseases, according to the American Lung Association.
“Mold, dust mites, insect feces and other particles in the air can trigger allergies and asthma attacks,” says Janice Nolen, assistant vice president of the American Lung Association in Washington DC.
If you want to improve indoor air quality, keep sources of pollution out of the home by ensuring you have good ventilation, both into and out of the house, Nolen explains. “A lot of mold, bacteria and other pollutants need moisture to grow. So keeping humidity levels below 50% and fixing leaks can help reduce risks,” she says.
If you are wondering how to choose a cooling unit or heating system or brand you may need to ask yourself some questions and evaluate just exactly what is most important to you. Sears Home Services can help you prioritize your most important concerns so that when you begin evaluating products and brands your important points are addressed.
We will review some of the common questions people ask themselves during this process, help you understand how air flows through your home, how different filtration systems can impact your air quality and how humidity and temperature work together.
Learn when it’s time to replace your HVAC system and what to know before you buy.
Whether you live in a warm or cold climate, it’s always a good idea to check out your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system.
But how do you know if you need a new system — and what do you need to know before buying a new HVAC system to make a smart purchase?
