Tech was on time and courteous. After I pointed out that none of the 3 new water filters would go into the base he investigated and diagnosed the problem as a bad water filter base. This eould also keep water from getting to the ice maker and water dispenser. He bypassed it and the water dispenser worked. So far so good. He said I need a new base, and it was $58.00, a 30 minute job, but he didn'thave the part. Great! No problem! How much to install it? $554.00!!!!!!!!! Are you out of your mind??!!?? Even if you assume a minimum 1 hour charge, that's FAR beyond ridiculous and borders on unethical. I think the scam her is to quote a price that is so high that you will be glad to buy that Protection Plan for a few hundred dollars, plus $65 or so per month, which is what he tried to sell me. I do not fault the tech at all. He was nice and did his job. I do fault Sears for trying to scam me into buying the Protection Plan. Guess what? I ordered the part on- line and I guarantee that anyone with avworking knowledge of a screw driver can install it in less than an hour, probably a lot less. Will I call Sears again? Highly unlikely.
