## Strange Noises

## Thermostat Problems 

Sometimes the issue isn't the Carrier unit at all. It's the thermostat telling it what to do.

## Frequent Cycling

Dirty flame sensors make furnaces shut down right after lighting. They can't tell the flame is there, so they shut off the gas as a safety measure. Cleaning that sensor sometimes fixes it. You just need a bit of fine sandpaper and to know where to find the sensor. 

Low refrigerant in AC systems trips the pressure switch. The unit shuts down to protect itself and tries to run again after a while. Round and round it goes. Finding and fixing the leak is the real solution, not just adding more refrigerant. 

## Carrier Heat Pumps 

Carrier heat pumps have their own special issues. They cool in summer like an AC but also heat in winter by running the cooling cycle backward. Clever, but more complex. 

Reversing valves stick or fail. That's the part that switches between heating and cooling. When it gets stuck, you might have cooling but no heat, or the opposite. Sometimes tapping on the valve body frees it up temporarily, but it'll need replacement eventually. 

Defrost problems show up in winter. The outdoor coil needs to defrost periodically when it's cold out. Ice builds up, and the unit has to melt it off to work right. Defrost control boards fail and leave you with a giant ice block where your heat pump used to be. Not good.
