Disappointed

I have had a Sears maintenance agreement for over 20 years. For the last two months it has been the worst experience we have ever had. we've had a number of technicians come to the house. Each technician had to order different parts. Seems like they weren't sure what was wrong with my dryer. We had at least four possibly five no-shows from the technician or my wife had to stay home and wait for them with a no show of a Technician. Every time we called we are connected to the automated system with the AI agent, or you could not get any information about the repair or what was going on. After weeks of trying, we finally talked to our couple human beings kept telling us how sorry they were for the inconvenience. They were going to expedite the process so we can get our dryer fixed. Well that was told to us a couple of times but it still took over two months to fix the dryer. After a number of different technicians that came out, it still wasn't repaired. Frank was the last technician to come out put the parts in so the dryer is working right now. Frank did a good job. very disappointing I called the Better Business Bureau and complained of them contemplated getting a lawyer because of the length of time and miss information that we were getting. Contemplating canceling my maintenance agreement. Years ago this would've never happened. They were very good at the repair or replacing your appliance. Not so much anymore. It be nice to have real people to handle the situation so you can get things done the right way. Again, very disappointed in the whole process.

Common Appliance Problems We Fix in Pittsburgh Homes

Pittsburgh's humid continental climate keeps appliances working hard all year. Winter humidity can climb near 84% while summers stay warm and sticky, and that moisture, combined with inland hard-water mineral scale, puts steady stress on water-using appliances and cooling systems alike. Many homes in the Carrick area date to around 1900 or earlier, with compact kitchens and older laundry hookups, while the surrounding South Hills suburbs feature newer kitchens and higher-end equipment. That mix means our technicians see everything from vintage gas ranges to smart refrigerators. Below are the appliance problems we're called on to fix most often across these neighborhoods.

Refrigerator Not Cooling in Pittsburgh

A refrigerator that won't hold temperature is one of the most urgent calls we get. In older Carrick homes with compact kitchens, standard-depth units often sit tight against cabinetry, which can restrict airflow around the condenser coils and cause overheating. Dust buildup, a failing compressor, or a faulty defrost system are common culprits. In warmer, humid months the system works harder, so any weak component tends to show itself fast. Our technicians diagnose the cooling issue on-site and provide an exact quote before any work begins. Cleaning coils and checking door seals once a year is simple preventive maintenance that helps a fridge run efficiently and last longer.

Washing Machine Won't Spin or Drain in Pittsburgh

When a washer stops spinning or draining, laundry piles up quickly. Pittsburgh's humid air and hard water accelerate wear on hoses, valves, and pumps, and mineral scale can clog drain lines over time. In older homes with basement laundry setups, drainage runs are often longer and more prone to clogs. We check the drain pump, belt, lid switch, and control board to pinpoint the failure. Front-load and top-load washers each have their own common failure points, and our manufacturer-trained technicians know both. Replacing worn fill hoses before they burst is an easy way to avoid a bigger repair — and a flooded basement.

Dryer Not Heating in Pittsburgh

Cold, snowy Pittsburgh winters mean dryers run constantly, and a unit that won't heat is a real disruption. In many older Carrick homes, venting runs are longer or more restricted than modern construction allows, which traps lint and reduces airflow — a leading cause of no-heat complaints and a genuine fire risk. We test heating elements, thermal fuses, gas igniters, and thermostats to find the problem. Blocked venting often masquerades as a broken heating element, so we inspect the full airflow path. Keeping vents clear each season improves drying performance and safety, and it's worth doing before winter sets in.

Dishwasher Leaking or Not Draining in Pittsburgh

Dishwashers in the Pittsburgh area fight a constant battle with hard-water mineral scale, which builds up in spray arms, filters, and drain lines and leaves dishes cloudy or wet. In historic Carrick kitchens, dishwashers are often retrofitted into small galley layouts where tight plumbing can lead to leaks or slow draining. We diagnose failing pumps, worn door gaskets, clogged filters, and cracked hoses. Standing water at the bottom usually points to a drain or pump issue rather than the appliance itself. Periodic descaling and cleaning the filter go a long way toward keeping a dishwasher draining properly.

Oven Not Heating Evenly in Pittsburgh

Uneven baking or an oven that won't reach temperature is common across both older and newer Pittsburgh homes. Many older homes rely on gas ranges with aging igniters and burner assemblies, while renovated Carrick homes and South Hills suburban kitchens increasingly feature electric and smart ranges with sensitive control boards. A weak bake element, a failing igniter, or a miscalibrated temperature sensor can all cause hot and cold spots. Our technicians service gas and electric models across a wide range of brands and eras. Testing the oven's temperature accuracy periodically helps catch drift before it ruins a meal.

HVAC, Heat Pump & Furnace Issues in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh's four-season climate puts heavy year-round demand on heating and cooling systems — lows near 20°F in January and warm, humid summers near 84°F in July. That means both furnaces and air conditioners get worked hard, and frequent thunderstorms and snowstorms can trigger seasonal breakdowns. We service central air systems that struggle to keep up during humid heat waves, heat pumps that lose efficiency, and gas furnaces that fail to ignite on the coldest nights. Sears Home Services repairs all three system types with EPA-certified technicians. Scheduling seasonal maintenance before summer and winter peaks helps prevent the emergency calls that come when systems fail under load.

Frequently Asked Questions — Appliance Repair in Pittsburgh

Costs vary by appliance and the parts involved. Your technician charges a diagnostic fee of $90 to $150 depending on the appliance, and that fee is waived if you proceed with the repair. After diagnosing the problem on-site, the technician provides an exact quote — parts and labor — that is locked in once provided. You approve the cost before any work begins.

We're available six days a week with early morning to evening appointments, and same-day appointments may be available in your area. Check for same-day availability when you schedule online or call (412) 203-4296. Booking early in the day gives you the best chance at a same-day slot.

Our manufacturer-trained technicians repair most major brands, including Whirlpool, Maytag, Samsung, LG, GE, Kenmore, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, Amana, Bosch, and more — no matter where you bought it. We service both older and newer models common across Carrick and the South Hills.

Most refrigerators last about 10 to 13 years. If yours is under eight years old and the repair costs less than half the price of a comparable new unit, repair is usually the smart choice — and it keeps a working appliance out of the landfill. Our technician can assess the condition and give you an exact quote so you can make an informed decision.

Schedule online or by phone, then a manufacturer-trained technician diagnoses the issue at your home and provides an exact quote. Once you approve, the technician completes the repair — often in a single visit, since our trucks carry commonly needed parts. Every repair is backed by a service guarantee.

Yes. After the on-site diagnosis, your technician provides an exact quote covering both parts and labor. That quote is locked in once provided and does not change. Work begins only after you approve the cost, and if you decline, you pay only the diagnostic fee.

Our technicians provide appliance repair throughout Pittsburgh and nearby communities including Carrick, Bethel Park, Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon, Pleasant Hills, Brentwood, and Whitehall. We cover the South Hills and surrounding neighborhoods with service six days a week — just schedule online or call to confirm coverage for your address.

Yes. Many Carrick homes date to around 1900 or earlier, with compact kitchens, retrofitted dishwasher spaces, and older or longer dryer venting runs. Our technicians are experienced with tight installations and aging plumbing and electrical setups, so we diagnose these older configurations carefully and repair them correctly the first time.

Pittsburgh's humidity and hard water are hard on appliances. Clean refrigerator coils annually, descale your dishwasher and washing machine periodically to fight mineral buildup, keep dryer vents clear before winter, and check washer fill hoses for wear. Scheduling yearly preventive maintenance catches small problems before they turn into expensive repairs.
