Tips for customers with Whirlpool or Maytag French door refrigerator models

Refrigerators with French doors continue to be a popular model among our customers.  This style of refrigerator is made by many manufacturers, however we have noticed a common problem reported by customers for Whirlpool, Maytag and Amana French door refrigerators.  Customers have reported a problem with the refrigerator compartment being too cold.  In many instances when we are in the customer's home, we have noticed that this can be caused when the refrigerator is not connected to a water supply but the ice maker is still turned on.  In this scenario, the ice compartment temperature will lower to 15°F as the ice maker attempts to make ice.  In extended low usage conditions, this lowered ice compartment temperature can cause the refrigerator compartment temperature to fall below the set point.  An easy fix to this problem is to shut off the ice maker on/off switch if and when the unit is not connected to a water supply.

I purchased a rear tine tiller 917.299060 July 1 the drive belt keeps coming off before I get to the garden. What the secret to keeping the belt on?93

Posted by Earl Bailey on July 02, 2009 at 04:53 PM CDT #

Hi Earl! My name is Darold, part of your Sears Blue Crew! For proper belt tension, the extension spring should have about 5/8 inch stretch when drive control bar is in "ENGAGED" position. To view the steps to achieve this please refer to your owners manual on page 16. If you need a replacement manual you can view the PDF file of yours on www.managemyhome.com by following the link below. http://www.managemyhome.com/mmh/owner_manuals/search?query=917299060&intcmp=A5

I have a new Kenmore Trio. It makes "popping" noises periodically all day long that last for maybe 15 seconds. The delivery guys said it would make noises the first day until it cooled down to the setting (maybe 24 hrs). The fridge is now 3 weeks old. They are loud enough to hear in another room. Someone said it was the ice maker, but I do not have the ice maker connected, and I believe I have turned it off. The noise appears to be coming from the left side of the fridge (facing it). Some one else said it was due to the self-defrost. Is this a normal situation or should I have a repairman look at it while it? Otherwise it seems to work fine.

Hi Billy! My name is Darold, part of your Sears Blue Crew! A certain amount of heat is to be expected. An over abundance of heat could be caused by several things depending on your brand and model. If the amount of heat is a concern it would be best to contact us to have a technician come take a look at it.

We came home from vacation to find the freezer defrosting, leaking onto the floor. The temperature seems to be dropping. It seems like the compressor tries to turn on but after a second of humming it switches off. Is this a problem thats worth repairing? The fridge is 12 years old and we have considered purchasing a new one. Advice

We have a Kenmore 10--Model No.253-829-1081, Manufactured 01-89 Elec rating Amps 5.0, 115 V. 60 Hz. Refrig. R-12 The motor has stopped. Is it worth considering fixing, is the R-12 not available, would a new scratch and dent be more sensible with improvement that have evolved since '89?

Hi Nelson! My name is Darold, part of your Sears Blue Crew! Given that your refrigerator is 20 years old and federal law prohibits the sale of R12 to "noncertified" individuals it may be more sensible to look for a newer refrigerator.

I have a Kenmore Elite coldspot side by side refrigerator that I bought new in 2004. Had service people out 3 times in the first year working on the ice dispenser (warranty); Sears out last year to replace the cooling damper ($258); local repairmain replaced the ice maker two months later ($180); now its barely cooling and making loud buzzing and clicking noises from near the compressor; maybe the relay. Its Tuesday and Sears won't come out until Friday. This is a lot of problems for an expensive refrigerator.

Posted by Russ Buettner on August 26, 2009 at 07:33 AM CDT #

Hi Russell! My name is Darold, part of your Sears Blue Crew. It appears from your statement that our techs for your area have appointments already in place which is why the next available was on Friday. I do apologize for this frustration and I dont know if it can be moved up at all in your area since I dont have a zip code to check but if you would like to contact us directly we can go back through the systems and see if there are any possible openings sooner for you.

I have a Whirlpool Gold side by side refrigerator model# GS6NBEXRS00 and I am having a problem with the ice maker. It seems to be producing ice but it is not falling into the reservoir container so that ice may be dispensed. Please advise as to what the problem could be. Thank you!

Hi Michelle! My name is Darold, part of your Sears Blue Crew. Most likely its frozen up. Try removing the auger motor and thawing it to see if it will then.

The right door of our new Whirlpool french door fridge slams open. Are there any fixes for this problem?

Posted by Bill Davidson on September 16, 2009 at 10:59 PM CDT #

Actually it is a Kitchenaid fridge - sorry about that.

Posted by Bill Davidson on September 16, 2009 at 11:00 PM CDT #

Hello Bill Davidson, this is Jon from the Sears Blue Crew.  There are a couple of things to try that may resolve the door slamming. Many times when the door either slams open or closed it has to do with the hinges being to loose. The hinges can be tightened usually with just a flat head screw driver. Also make sure your seals are not loose, or dirty causing the door not to grab on correctly. For more answers you may also check our ManageMyHome.com website, click on the answers tab and ask an expert your question.

for kenmore range technician; we have a canadian made kenmore range electric model no. 7904566 2104. we fired up all electric burners yesterday and all went well then the power was cut off suddenly to all burners and oven. However the lights on the front panel with the up/down timers function were left operable. we checked the circuit breaker controlling power to the stove and there were no breakers tripped. this seems like some simple break in power which would not require a tech visit. if only your service could just give a tip as to what to look for and correct. appreciate your help today given how much we lean on our range for preparing each and every meal. incidentally all the other appliances and lights around the range work perfectly. end of message.

Hi Gerald Mull, I'm Cooper a Sears Blue Crew member. I will be happy to assist you with your range. I recommend taking a voltage reading to determine if the control board is getting 120 volts. If the control is getting the correct voltage I would recommend replacing the control board. If the control is not receiving the 120 volts, I would recommend checking the wiring harness. I hope you find this information helpful.

I just purchased a new sears refrig. /french doors. plugged it in and the compressor runs only a minute /shuts off and the number 2 is flashing on the fridge side

Posted by mark nuss on March 06, 2010 at 06:01 PM CST #

Hello Mark, this is Kevyn from the Sears Blue Service Crew. I have not heard of this specific problem on a brand new refrigerator before. I can understand what a pain it can be to have problems with a new appliance. Try unplugging it for a few minutes then plug it back in to the outlet. Doing this will reset the control board. If it does not fix the problem, I would recommend having one of our technicians look at it for you. Since it is brand new, the unit should have the manufacturer's warranty. Check your owner's manual for that information. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please use the home page of our website, www.SearsHomeServices.com or call us directly at 1-800-424-2047.
